Obituary of Gerald Irwin Barnes
NEW GLASGOW – Gerald Irwin Barnes, 90, New Glasgow, went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 1, 2013 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Great Village, Colchester Co., he was a son of the late Firman Mclure and Jean (Carter) Barnes. During the Second World War, he was employed as a machinist with the former Trenton Industries Gun Shop. Following the war, he operated his own truck, hauling coal and gravel, and then driving for Acadian Lines prior to employment with the former Trenton Works as a machinist and shipper, from where he retired after 30 years of service. While at Trenton Works, he served for several years as chairman of the Grievance Committee of United Steel Workers of America, Local 1231. During this time period he was a co-owner of Trenton Car Sales Ltd., where he enjoyed selling cars with his partners, Eddie and Ralph. During retirement, Gerald served on the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board for several years. He was a member of Trenton Church of the Nazarene where he served as treasurer, board member, Sunday school teacher, superintendent and as a member of the Big Lake Camp board. Gerald was an active member of The Gideons. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, berry picking and was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs supporter. To his family and friends, he was known as “Mr. Fix-it” because he was always “doing” for others. Gerald lived his Christian faith each day and displayed it best as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Helen G. (Sharpe); children, David (Kelly) Barnes, Bridgewater; Elizabeth (Scot) Hall, Fredericton, N.B.; Robert “Bob” (Charlotte) Barnes, Fort McMurray, Alta.; grandchildren, Jennie, Jeremy, Tyler, Melanie, Mary-Anne, Ben, Maegan and Dan; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Alice Robb and Hazel (Frank) Locke, Calgary, Alta.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Marie Williams; sister-in-law, Mary Sharpe; brothers-in-law, Verbal Williams, Burdette Sharpe and Danny Robb.
The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 4th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 5th in Trenton Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Leon Teal officiating, assisted by Rev. Walter Wilcox. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery.
