Obituary of John Lewis MacKay

ALMA – John Lewis “Jack” MacKay, 70, Alma, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 14, 2014 at his cottage. Raised in Mount Thom, he was a son of the late John and Gladys MacKay. Jack was a trucker for over 50 years and was currently employed with Art Burge Enterprises Ltd. He was a member for the Alma Fire Department for 27 years and previously with East River Valley Fire Department for over 20 years. He had been an assistant instructor with the Nova Scotia Fire Fighters School, Waverly and had served two terms representing Nova Scotia on the Maritime Fire Fighters Association. Jack was an associate member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 28, Stellarton. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, playing darts, watching truck and horse pulls and was an avid NASCAR fan especially, for Dodge car drivers. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, who especially enjoyed spending time with his four legged friends, Jaguar, Khaley and Samson. Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Karen; daughter, Susan (Fred) Muirhead, Scotsburn; son, Douglas (Barb) MacKay, Stellarton; mother of his children, Marjorie; step-daughter, Kathy (Robert) Kenny, Irish Mountain; step-grandchildren, Megan, Melanie (Mike) and Mary. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Alma Fire Hall, Alma, concluding with a tribute by Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson. Private interment will be in Stillman Cemetery. Due to family allergies, no flowers please. Donations may be made in Jack’s memory to the Alma Fire Department. Arrangements are entrusted to P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
