Obituary of Gerald Vincent Farrell

PINE TREE – Gerald Vincent Farrell, 74, Pine Tree, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by his family. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late George Patrick and Margaret Mary (Phalen) Farrell. He was a partner, with his brother, John, in Farrell’s Used Cars, Pine Tree for many years. Gerald was a member of the former St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Thorburn. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, Joan, at their camp at Warwick Mountain. Gerald was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and great supporter of hockey, coaching Thorburn Golden Hawks Midget D for many years, winning provincials in the late 80’s. He enjoyed fishing with his brother, Doug in the many secret locations they shared. Gerald lived life to the fullest; Saturday evenings, playing pranks on those he loved, listening to Hank Williams Sr., playing horseshoes, cards and washer toss. He leaves a rich legacy of love and memories to his family. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Joan (Rice); daughters, Juanita (Chuck) McKeigan, MacLellan’s Brook; Sherry (Mike) Richards, MacLellan’s Brook; son, David (Tiffany), Clinton, P.E.I.; foster son, Jason (Crystal), Westville; grandchildren, Ethan, Cameron, Bailee, Emily, Kayden, Dominic and Scarlett; sister, Helen (Don) MacDonald, Antigonish; brothers, Bernie (Shirley) Farrell, New Glasgow; John Farrell, Pine Tree; sisters-in-law, Jane Farrell (Gerry), Churchville; Vie Farrell, Angus, Ont.; brothers-in-law, Harold MacDonnell, Pine Tree; Bill Dewtie, Thorburn; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Isabel Winifrey, Beatrice MacDonnell and Marie Dewtie; brothers, Douglas and Francis; sister-in-law, Theresa Farrell; nephew, Mark Dewtie; mother-in-law, Madeline Elizabeth Rice. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 3rd in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 4th with Father Colin MacKinnon presiding. Spring interment will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Thorburn. Donations may be made in memory of Gerald to Aberdeen Health Foundation Palliative Care Unit Endowment. (Please click to donate online.)
