Obituary of Roy Forbes Smith
MERIGOMISH – Roy Forbes Smith, 91, Merigomish, passed away peacefully, Thursday, November 25, 2021, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Merigomish, he was a son of the late William Forbes and Florence Catherine (Roy) Smith. Roy was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish where he had served as Treasurer and as an Elder. He was a prominent and proud member of the Merigomish Community, serving as Postmaster for 50 years. In addition, he owned and operated Smith’s convenience store and gas bar. Roy was a member of the Merigomish and District Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member and Past Master of Hudson Lodge No. 77, A.F. & A.M., Thorburn and a member of Moore Lodge No. 17, IOOF, Thorburn. Roy leaves a rich legacy of generosity, selflessness, and love.
Surviving are his wife, Norene; children, Glenn Smith, Shubenacadie; Anne-Marie Smith (Dr. Carl Davis), Halifax; Brian Smith (Sarah Schuitema), Winterport, Maine; Erin Smith, Merigomish; grandchildren, Simon, Morgan, Ryan, Christopher Roy and Ariel; sisters, Edith (Terry) Iceton, Toronto, Ont.; Janet Thompson, Toronto; brothers, Harold (Marion) Smith, Halifax; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Winnie Smith, Margaret MacFarlane and Dorothy Smith; a brother in infancy.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. Monday, November 29 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 30 in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish with Rev. Gail Johnson Murdock officiating. Private interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Merigomish.
