Obituary of Vernon Clive Bonvie

NEW GLASGOW - Vernon Clive Bonvie, 79, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Friday, January 8, 2010 in the Manor. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Moses and Lillian (Gratto) Bonvie. He was a member of the Pictou County Gideons and a member of the Trenton Church of the Nazarene for 39 years. Vernon was employed with the former Maritime Tel and Tel and retired from Scott Maritimes at 57 years of age. He was a founding member of the Canadian Registered Safety Professional Association and had taught First Aid to many different groups throughout Pictou County. Vernon was diagnosed with Parkinson's in his 53rd year, but he never lost his love of life and enjoyed everyday to the fullest. He was a founding member of the Pictou County Support Group for Parkinson’s. Vernon loved country music, especially Hank Snow. In fact, many of his friends nicknamed him "Hank". He obtained his amateur radio license at 16 years of age and was a lifetime member of the Pictou County Amateur Club. Throughout the years Vernon enjoyed talking to his Ham radio buddies (VEIYP – Yankee Papa) and spent many hours each day in his radio room before moving to Glen Haven. Twenty-four years after his diagnosis, Vernon traveled to British Columbia to see his great-grandson and new great-granddaughter. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveled to visit them often in the United States and Canada. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Helen (Aikens), New Glasgow; daughter, Janet (Stan) Reeder, Salem, Oregon; son, David (Marnie) Bonvie, Gibsons, .B.C.; sister, Faye Hoare, New Glasgow; grandchildren Chris (Meghann) Bonvie, Torrence, California; Emie (Brad) Adamkewicz, Athabasca, Alberta; Brett Bonvie, Athabasca, Alberta; Reed (Whitney) Reeder, Portland, Oregon; Zachary Reeder, Nampa, Idaho; great-grandchildren, Bauer and Lilly Adamkewicz, Tayvee Reeder; numerous nieces,nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Gloria McKean; brother, Allan Bonvie. The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9th and 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11th in Trenton Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Leon Teal and Rev. Dr. Stan Reeder officiating. Interment will be in Church Brook Cemetery, Little Harbour. Donations in Vernon’s memory may be made to the Parkinson Society Maritime Region or The Gideon Bible Society.
