Obituary of Donald N. MacLellan

MACLELLAN, Donald N. “Don” – It was with great sorrow that Don’s family bid a wonderful brother farewell, at home, on Friday, June 4, 2010. Born in New Glasgow on October 8, 1939, he was a son of the late James W. and Alice N. (Hamblen) MacLellan. Don lived and went to school in Linacy, and graduated from the former East Pictou Rural High School in 1957. He moved to Toronto in 1959 and became a Licensed Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic. He became Sales Manager for the former Dems Equipment, Thornhill, Ont., and its subsequent owners, Coneng Ford Power Ltd. and Ford Power (a division of Mandem Corporation) a distributor of Ford Industrial power products in Ontario until moving back home in 1982. In 1984 he became owner/operator of Glasgow Mercury Sales (1984) Ltd., a Mercury and Ford Heavy Truck and Mercury Car franchise. He was a past vice-president of the Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Association, a member of Rotary International both in New Glasgow and Toronto, and U.C.T. Pictonian Council 879. He was a former member of the Empire Club, Toronto. He was an elder and member of the former St. Paul’s Avenue Road United Church, Toronto. Don was an avid aviator, having flown his airplane from Toronto to New Glasgow many times, relinquishing his pilot licence five years ago due to ill health. He will be fondly remembered as a caring brother, a kind uncle and his dog Bear’s, best friend. Surviving are sisters, Jean (Peter) Johnson, Thorburn; Lois Kennedy and Adele Treen, Linacy; brother, Bill (Marlene), Sutherland’s River; sister-in-law, Evelyn MacLellan, New Glasgow; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, J. Walter, Eon A., A. Cameron and wife, Joan (Large). The family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Saturday, June 5th and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, June 6th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 7th, in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow with Rev. Jim Webber-Cook officiating. Interment will be in Durham Cemetery. Donations may be made in Don’s memory to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society or Trinity United Church Organ Fund.
