Obituary of Gregor Matthews Ward
LINACY – Gregor Matthews Ward, 75, Linacy, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2018 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow with his wife by his side.
Born on March 17, 1943 in Springhill, he was the son of George “Jack” and Kathryn (McCormick) Ward. Gregor was raised in a loving home on Fir Street, coasting down its hill in winter, playing in the alleys to Main Street and spending the summers at Heathers Beach. His father, Jack, was lost in the 1956 Springhill mine explosion, permitting him to enjoy a close bond with his mother until her passing in 1993. Gregor’s education in the 1950’s and 60’s was in the Springhill schools, Mount Allison University, Nova Scotia Teachers College, Acadia University and Memorial University. He enjoyed three summer educational excursions to Europe. He began his teaching career in Milton, Queens County for four years and taught for several years at Sir John A. MacDonald High School, Halifax County. Leaving teaching, he began a career as a travel consultant, achieving senior status over a 24-year period. A career he truly enjoyed everyday. Working in Woodstock, N.B., Miramichi, N.B., Fredericton, N.B. and Halifax. Gregor volunteered as a Cub and Boy Scout Leader, was a member of the Jaycees, sang with several Barber Shop quartets, Notable Friends, and participated in amateur theatre. He was most proud of his 25-year membership with the Royal Nova Scotia Tattoo Choir. After 56 years of “training” (as Gregor always said) to prepare himself, he found the love of his life and true soulmate, Francy Sheehan (from Moncton, N.B.) whom he married at White Point Beach Resort in 1999. Together they moved to Pictou in 2001 and relocated to the New Glasgow area in 2013.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Norma “Francy” “L.C.” Sheehan-Ward; step-son, Travis Forsyth, Linacy; aunts, Candice (Morley) Brown, Springhill; Marilyn Ward, Springhill; Annette Crummey, Dartmouth; uncle, Keith (Beverly) Ward, Antigonish; several cousins.
In honour of Gregor’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held. Arrangements are entrusted to P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
