Obituary of Valborg Goodman

LITTLE HARBOUR - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Valborg “Søs” (vonLinstow) Goodman, 86, Little Harbour, Pictou County, after a brief illness in the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow on January 11, 2014 with family at her side. Søs was born in Copenhagen, Denmark to Kirsten Rasmussen and Valdemar Hansen, the youngest of three daughters. While working as an au pair in England, she met her husband, Nordau Goodman, a New Glasgow native who was a graduate student at Oxford University. They married in 1949 and in 1952 they moved to Nova Scotia, settling first in New Glasgow and then in Point Forty Four, Little Harbour. Søs had a busy life raising four children. She enjoyed doing volunteer work with many charitable organizations, notably the Aberdeen Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Rotary Anns and the Pictou County Kennel Club. Her keen mind explored many avenues including art, literature, classical music and history with a special interest in antiques. Family members are ever grateful for her gifts of intricate knitted apparel. She kept many of her Danish traditions and never lost her native language. Søs found her special peace at Point Forty Four watching sunsets over the ocean she loved, surrounded by her beautiful gardens. She is survived by her sons, Lars (Andrea Cross), Halifax; George (Kim), New Glasgow; daughter, Kirsten (Laurie Rogers), Guelph, Ont.; daughter-in-law, Eleanor Gray, Halifax; grandchildren, Alexandra, Maria, Gregory, Julia and Miranda; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Nordau; son, Philip; sisters, Gudrun and Kirsten. The family would like to thank the paramedics, ER and ICU staff at the Aberdeen Hospital for their non-stop care, dedication, respect, and guidance. The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, January 15 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, 536 Merigomish Road, New Glasgow. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Søs’ memory may be made to the Pictou County Victorian Order of Nurses or ALS Society of Nova Scotia. (click on link to donate online now)
