Obituary of Robert Sydney Dickinson

LINACY - Robert Sydney “Bob” Dickinson, 86, R. K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, formerly of Westville, Linacy and Amherst, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 5, 2014 in the home. Born March 31, 1928 in Westville, he was a son of the late Sydney Francis and Violet (Strathie) Dickinson. Bob completed his grade 12 at Westville High School and attended Teachers College in Truro. Upon graduation, Bob taught for one year in a one room school in Goldenville, Guysborough County. Following, he was employed with Canada Manpower offices in New Glasgow and Amherst for 36 years, retiring in 1988. In earlier years, Bob was active in his community and had served as President of the Linacy Home and School association for one year, and as Treasurer of the Linacy Fire Department for a number of years. Bob was a 60-year jewel holder of Scotia Lodge No. 11, IOOF, Cushing Encampment No. 10 and Canton Dryden No.2, Westville. He served as Grand Master of The Grand Lodge, Grand Patriarch of The Grand Encampment and Brigadier General of the Patriots Militant of the Grand Lodge. Bob will be forever remembered by those who loved him. Surviving are his children, Linda Knox, Merigomish; David (Joyce Ross), Kenzieville; Patricia (Lester) Fitzpatrick, Linacy; Virginia (Brian) Mahoney, Stellarton; James, Hamilton, Ont.; step-son, Stephen Colborne, Amherst; grandchildren, Damon (Jen) Fitzpatrick, Abby (Tyler) Charlton, Carstairs, Alta.; Vincent Mahoney (Chrissy MacLeod), New Glasgow; Erin Mahoney ( Paul Starr), Montreal, Que.; Jessica Mahoney (Shawn Bisson), Halifax; Bradley Mahoney, Stellarton; Abe MacKinnon, New Glasgow; John (Natasha) MacKinnon, Kenzieville; Jarrod MacKinnon, New Glasgow; Jesse Colborne, Quinn Colborne, Brady Colborne and Jackson Colborne, Amherst; great-grandchildren, Chloe Maielle and Emsley Gray Charlton; Hannah MacKinnon; Jessica, Emily and Jay MacKinnon, Austin Cooper; special friend, Sylvia Ploof, Highgate Center, Vermont; nieces and their families. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Stewart (Hazel), Ronald (Lena); grandson, Nicholas Fitzpatrick; nephew, Raylo Dickinson. Family members wish to extend special thank you to the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home staff for the wonderful care and kindness shown to Bob. In honour of Bob’s wishes, a public graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 9 in Auburn Cemetery, Westville with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Family flowers only.
