Obituary of Deacon Norman Graham Paris
NEW GLASGOW – Deacon Norman Graham “Turk” Paris, 67, New Glasgow, surrounded by family and friends, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, October 23, 2007.
Born in New Glasgow on November 15, 1939, he was a son of the late James A. and Ida (Jewell) Paris. He was a carpenter by trade having apprenticed and worked for Fraser Mason & Fraser as well as other large construction companies. Some jobs he worked on included the Aberdeen Mall, Michelin, NS Power Corporation, Highland Square Mall and Glen Haven Manor. He was an active, self-employed carpenter for many years before officially retiring in 2004. He was a past president of the Carpenters & Jointers union. He was first elected to Town Council in 1997, where he actively served until his death, including two terms as Deputy Mayor. Turk was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen (Gibson) Paris; son, Jeffery (Monica) Paris, Halifax ; daughter, Gail (Robert) MacLean, Whitby, Ont.; granddaughters, Riley and Mychael Paris; grandsons, Bryson and Reegan MacLean; goddaughter, Sonya (Dave) MacNeil; brothers, James A. (Ann) Paris, Laval, Que.; Allan, New Glasgow; Thomas, Montreal; sisters, Clara, Florrie, New Glasgow; Nancy (Dave DeVille), Bible Hill; Peggy (Dave) Cosh, New Glasgow; aunts, Normintreal (Charles) Paris, Sweedlyn Cromwell, New Glasgow; uncles, Hugh “Sparky” (Ruth) Paris, New Glasgow; Percy Paris, Halifax; special nephew, Darryl Paris; special cousin, Francis Paris; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Maxine Paris, Mildred Major; brothers, Barry, John.
Turk was a very spiritual man of great faith and determination. He was a mentor to many, and always ready to speak a good word when called upon at Church. He was a Crowned Deacon and member of Second United Baptist Church. He had served as President of the Men’s Brotherhood, and had been a member of the Church Choir, a Sunday school teacher and Superintendent. Turk served as an usher, member of the Male Chorus, on the Finance Committee, Board of Trustees, the AUBA Trustees and AUBA Laymen’s Council. He was also past President of the Ward One Recreation Centre and had represented the Town of New Glasgow on the Transportation Committee, Glen Haven Manor Board, Riverview Home Board, Fire Department Committee (past Chair), Library Board, and Scotia Rink Commission.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. AUBA Layman’s service will be held 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in Second United Baptist Church with Rev. Ogueri Ohanaka officiating, assisted by Rev. Tracy Grosse, AUBA Moderator. Interment will be in Brookside cemetery with reception to follow in the mezzanine of the John Brother MacDonald Stadium, New Glasgow.
