Obituary of Dorothy Evelyn Scully

MACPHERSON’S MILLS – Dorothy Evelyn Scully, 68, MacPherson’s Mills, passed away very peacefully on September 7, 2008 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Antigonish, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Taylor and Irene Elizabeth (MacGregor) MacLeod. She attended East Pictou Rural High School (Class of 1957) and Acadia University (Class of 1961). She spent several years teaching at various schools, including West Pictou and Stellarton. She retired from Statistics Canada in 2004 after 30 years of service. So many people have had their lives enriched by sharing her passion and enthusiasm for life, learning and her tremendous sense of humor. While her children were growing, she dedicated herself to their interests and friends. Everyone who participated in Cubs, 4-H, Basketball, Air Cadets, hockey, ringette and camping benefited from her dedication. She always enjoyed young people and gave freely of herself in so many ways. She also kept her own interests active through card parties, community involvement and creative writing. Her love of history, puzzles and good mysteries helped her to become one of Pictou County’s most knowledgeable and respected genealogists. She has spent countless hours researching many family trees to not only satisfy her own curiosity but for the benefit and joy of people around the world. She was very proud to be the founding President of the Pictou County Roots Society and spent much of her time in the “Roots Room” as a volunteer, mentor and researcher before and after her retirement. Although she has left us, she will live on forever through her family, friends, research and writings. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Joseph “Joe”; sons, Ian (Angela) and their daughter, Morgan Dorothy, Warman, Sask.; Rob (Wendy) and their son, James William Scott “Jamie”, Beamsville, Ont.; daughter, Brenda (Cameron Pelley) and their sons, Aaron James and Jason Thomas Pelley, Coalburn; brothers, Kenneth (Geraldine), Abbotsford, B.C.; Cyril (Eileen), Truro; sister, Joan (Adrian) Koenraads, Ingersoll, Ont.; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; numerous cousins.
