Obituary of Olive Elizabeth Kathleen Bowen

NEW GLASGOW – Olive Elizabeth Kathleen “Ollie” Bowen, 82, New Glasgow, passed away, Monday, October 26, 2009 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax, surrounded by her family. Born in New Glasgow, she was the daughter of the late Harold Raymond and Hazel Edna (MacKenzie) Hingley. In earlier years, Ollie was the first certified drug clerk to dispense at the former Rexall Drug Store, Trenton. For many years she was Administrative Assistant to the Hon. Elmer MacKay, P.C., Q.C. She was a member of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow where she served as an Elder of the Kirk Session, member of the choir, Ladies Aid, Elsie MacKay A.M.S and former CGIT Superintendent. She was a Past President of the PC Women’s Association of Nova Scotia. She was Secretary of Century Chapter No. 10, Order of the Eastern Star, New Glasgow, a Past Matron, Past District Deputy Grand Matron and a Past Grand Representative of Georgia. She was a member of the Dr. Caroline Carmichael Chapter, IODE, New Glasgow, national life member of the IODE and held positions in the provincial IODE. She was an active member in her community for many years. Ollie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Surviving are her daughters, Darleen (David) Horne, Oshawa, Ont.; Melda (John) MacMillan, Hampton, N.B.; Ruth (David) Lamb, Orleans, Ont.; grandchildren, Janet O’Donnell, Chris (Karen) Horne, Tanya (Patrick) Hunter, Brett (Patricia) MacMillan, Allison and Clarissa Lamb; great-grandchildren, Brendan, Ashlee, Bailey and Brady Hunter; Linden and Grace O’Donnell; Emma and Emily Horne; many nieces, nephews and cousins; her faithful and loyal friend, Tory Kat. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Douglas David “Doug” Bowen; infant son, David Raymond Bowen. The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29th and Century Chapter No. 10, OES service 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29th, all in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30th in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Sand officiating, assisted by Rev. Bruce Munro. Interment will be in Church Brook Cemetery, Little Harbour. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 37 Mountain Road, New Glasgow, NS B2H 3W4, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Aberdeen Hospital Trust.
