Obituary of Alice Artheia Ballantyne-Smith
NEW GLASGOW – Alice Artheia Ballantyne-Smith passed away peacefully, Sunday, December 11, 2022, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Thorburn, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Vera Mae (Langille) Cholmondeley. In earlier years Alice assisted with the family farm along with working at the former Allan Sutherland Plumbing and Zellers. In 1972 she began employment with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation where she was an Engineering Aide for construction works for over 18 years. Alice married Douglas Smith in 1988, a couple years later they relocated to Yarmouth, later to Dartmouth and in retirement, returned to New Glasgow. Within these communities, she was active volunteer with such activities as Meals on Wheels, food banks and church functions. Alice felt blessed with the family she was given. She loved and actively celebrated her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s successes in education, sports, and careers. Alice and Doug attended as many of their grandchildren’s activities as possible. She maintained a close bond with her many nieces and nephews, whom she cared for dearly. Alice and Douglas enjoyed travelling, and toured throughout Scandinavia, British Isles, Europe as well as the Caribbean and spent many winters in Florida, where they forged lasting friendships.
Surviving are her husband, Douglas G. Smith; daughter, Joanne (Sandy) Chisholm, Woodburn; sons, Kevin (Lynn) Ballantyne, Woodburn; Shawn Ballantyne (Ruth McLeod), Port Williams; grandchildren, Sara (Nicholas), David (Shannon), John (Kim), Megan (Aaron), Lindsay (Daniel), Katie (James), Nathan (Alyssa), Ryan and Janine (Jon); great-grandchildren, Lachlan, Lincoln, Wynn, Lillian, Bayne, Liam, Eric, Landon, Kaylee, Phoebe, Silas, Nolan and Frankie; brother, Rev. Arthur (Linda) Cholmondeley, St. Mary’s, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Beverley Chomondeley, Edmonton, Alta.; Diane Chomondeley, Bailieboro, Ont.; Beverley Smith, Eastern Passage; brothers-in-law, Ross (Teresa) Smith, Fall River; John Smith, Windsor Junction; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, David W. Ballantyne; sisters, Shirley (Ken) Zentner and Betty (Lloyd) Cunningham; brothers, Allister, Gary, Gordon, Harold, Howard and Stephen David in infancy; sisters-in-law, Annie (Kjell) Henriksen, Marjorie Ballantyne, Alice (Forrest) Porter, Agnes Ballantyne; brothers-in-law, Richard Smith and John (Betty) Ballantyne.
Alice’s family wish to acknowledge the excellent care and compassion provided by the professional staff of the Aberdeen Hospital and Glen Haven Manor.
The family will receive visitors 10-10:50 a.m. Thursday, December 15 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Interment will be in Woodburn Cemetery at a later date.
Donations may be made in memory of Alice to Pictou County Food Bank or Woodburn Cemetery.
