Obituary of Vernon Whitman MacIvor

MERIGOMISH – It is with heavy hearts, we, the family of Vernon Whitman “Bernie” MacIvor announce his passing on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born September 12, 1928, Bernie was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being the youngest of nine children to Catherine (Smith) and James MacIvor, formerly of Stellarton. 

Sadly, he was predeceased by his two oldest children, Janet and Ron, and granddaughter, Alysia.

Surviving are his loving wife of 72 years, Irene (Murray) MacIvor; children, Dana MacIvor, Merigomish; Darlene (Allister) Muir, Plymouth; Jim MacIvor, Stellarton; Jack (Heather) MacIvor, MacPhersons Mills; June (Hugh) Schofield, Port Dufferin; Alanna (Dale) Chambers), Nauwigewauk, N.B.; Shawna MacIvor, Big Island; grandchildren, Amy, Murray, Caleb, Taylor, Nathan, Josh, Damon, Melissa, Angela, Megan, Maria, Marcus, Roscoe, Mason, Caitlyn, Keefe and Adrian; daughter-in-law, Jo MacIvor, Merigomish; sister-in-law, June Skidmore, Miden, Ont.; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Family was the most important thing to Dad.  A hardworking, honest man, he laboured cheerfully as a mechanic his whole life until retirement (which he never really did). Always busy, but always available to his family. He was a rock of stability, a voice of reason, a good, humoured friend, a helper, avid outdoorsman and fun-loving card player.  His legacy to us all is his example of kindness, loyalty, fairness, and wisdom.  Your gentle smile will be greatly missed.

We wish to thank the Palliative Care unit and the Pictou County VON. Their care and kindness will never be forgotten.

A public graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 15 in Riverview Cemetery, Merigomish with Rev. Gail Johnson Murdock officiating. 

A Celebration of Life will follow from 2-4 p.m.  in the Merigomish Community Centre.
