Obituary of Mark Augustus Tobin
Mark Augustus Tobin, 77, Meiklefield, passed away peacefully, Saturday, November 25, 2023, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow with his family by his side.
Born on August 11, 1946, in Sydney, he was a son of the late Terrance Augustus and Helen (Campbell) Tobin. In his late teens he joined the American Army and served in the Vietnam War. Following his military career, he became a bricklayer. Mark was a member of the International Allied Local No. 2, Sydney for over 25 years. In his late 40’s Mark lost his eyesight following a workplace accident. He adapted to his new condition and kept on going. Mark was awarded the Carnegie Medal in recognition of his outstanding act of heroism in rescuing a drowning man when totally blind. He received another medal of bravery from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Honourable Edward Schreyer, Governor General of Canada. Mark was involved with the CNIB for many years and had four seeing eye dogs, Rex, Barney, Bailey, and Yale with whom he spent countless hours outdoors walking. In earlier years Mark enjoyed playing guitar, however, after the onset of blindness, he took up fly tying, became an expert fly tyer and avid fisherman. He will be lovingly remembered for his wonderful sense of humour and a kind spirit.
Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Dorothy (Smith) Tobin; children, Debbie, Ferris, Dawn, Mark, Valerie, Annie, Coady, Christopher and Terry; step-children, Tracy and Shane; 13 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; siblings, Valerie, Beverly, Colleen, Wally and Dennis “Doc”; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Blair, Neddy, and Moose.
In honour of Mark’s wishes, his family will celebrate his life privately. Donations may be made in Mark’s memory to his family.
