Obituary of Verlie Mae Penney
In Loving Memory of Verlie Penney (née Reader)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Verlie Penney, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Mom left this world peacefully a week before her 84th birthday, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Bloomfield, Newfoundland, on January 7th, 1940, to Mary (Dampier) and Roy Reader. Tragically losing her mother in infancy, Mom was raised by her loving Aunt Mae and Uncle Billy Kean, gaining a dear brother, Winston (Donna) Kean, in the process.
Bloomfield was always home to Mom. It is where she was born and raised, and where her and Dad raised their family. Later in life Mom and Dad travelled to Alberta and Nova Scotia to spend cherished moments with their children and families. In October 2004, Mom and Dad made New Glasgow their permanent home.
In 2019, Mom moved into Glenn Haven Manor, New Glasgow, where she found joy in the company of her fellow residents and enjoyed participating in various programs and activities, with a special fondness for bingo and church.
Mom’s greatest joy in life was her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion.
She is survived by her children: Kay (Gerald) Skiffington, Brooklyn, N.L.; Dale Penney, Fort McMurray, Alta.; Donna (Stephen) Forbes, New Glasgow. Mom will be dearly missed by her adored grandchildren, Devin Penney, Ashlee Penney, Sydney Forbes and Christopher (Melissa) Furlong; dear brother, Winston (Donna) Kean, London, Ont.; sisters-in law, Joyce (Walter) Day, Musgravetown, N.L.; Mary Penney, Bloomfield, N.L.; brother-in-law, Bob (Winnie) Penney, Botwood, N.L.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Hedley Lorne “Ed” Penney; sister-in-law, Louise Coles, Myrtice Martin and Anita Chaffey; brother-in-law, Milton Penney, Dalman Chaffey and Marvin Penney.
A celebration of Mom’s life will be held in Musgravetown United Church, Musgravetown, N.L. in the Summer of 2024.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of the Aberdeen Hospital’s Emergency and Palliative Care Units for their loving support during Mom’s final days.
“A mother holds her children’s hand for a while, their hearts forever.”
Love you Mom, Kay, Dale and Donna
