Obituary of Leslie Stewart
The death of Leslie Stewart, 95, New Glasgow occurred on Monday, January 15, 2024.
He was the son of Mary Stewart of Laggan. He lived in New Glasgow where he began his career with I. Matheson Co. as a boiler maker for a few years. He then moved on to Spencer Motors Ltd. where he was employed as an auto body shop foreman. He joined Traders General Insurance Group as an Insurance Adjuster, covering Pictou County, Cape Breton and P.E.I. for 12 years. He was transferred to Halifax, where he moved his family in 1966. In the 1970’s he had the opportunity to start Municipal Refuse Ltd., a curbside and container business covering Pictou and Antigonish Counties for 25 years. He sold the company in 1992, and when he was in his 70’s he opened a sub-division on the westside of New Glasgow. Les at one time was Commodore of the Royal William Yacht Club in Pictou Landing. He was a member of the Pictou County Antique Car Club. Over the years he owned several antique cars and trucks.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ivy (Kilner); son, Leslie Terrance Stewart, Markham, Ont.; daughter, Cynthia (Rob) Dutton and grandson, Rowan, Quispamsis, N.B.
He was predeceased by his mother, Mary; uncle, Alec; brother-in-law, Carl Hendsbee.
The family will receive visitors 10-10:50 a.m. Thursday, January 18 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Interment will be in Abercrombie Cemetery.
