My sympathy to all of you. I was a piper in the Fraser Holmes Pipe Band with Marlene in the 90s. Always kind, respectful of and for others, Marlene 's quiet personality was a strong presence in our band. Marlene did not let illness slow her down or stop her from doing what was important, caring or fun. Marlene in her kind, quiet way demonstrated strength, perseverance and grit. Marlene was a lovely lady. My thoughts and sympathy to you. Lorna MacIsaac.

Sending my love and condolences to Billy, Melanie, Missy, Adam and all of your family at this very sad time. Recalling knowing Marlene when I was a child visiting Nova Scotia, she had such a kind, gentle and calming manner and was always lovely to be around. Much later on when I had a cancer diagnosis Marlene sent me a beautiful card full of hope and positivity. In addition, she rallied her dragon boat team to also reach out to me with cards of care and uplifting stories and this truly helped to carry me through that difficult time. I was and still am very grateful for that her genuine kindness May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

Billy and family,
We send our condolences on Marlene’s passing. I treasure the memories of the Fraser Holmes Band’s big trip to California to participate in the Rose Parade in 1994. Marlene and I visited Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm on New Year’s Eve, and we had a wonderful time, enjoying the seasonal decorations, discovering Sourdough toast with Boysenberry jam in a little Café, even doing the Parachute Drop THREE TIMES!! She was up for anything! Always positive and cheerful, Marlene was a rock through all difficulties. She will be missed by many. Godspeed.

Dear Bill and family
I was saddened to hear of Marlene’s passing. I met Marlene when i moved back to New Glasgow and started playing pipes with the Fraser Holmes Memorial Ladies Pipe Band. She was always pleasant and I don’t think I ever saw her rattled over anything. Marlene was a dedicated Piper and could always be relied upon to show up and ready to play. May she rest in peace.

Dear Billy, Melissa, Melanie, Adam and family: Charles and I send our deepest condolence to all of you. Marlene was a wonderful friend and piping companion throughout the past 64 years. Our interest in bagpipes was sparked in 1960 when our parents arranged for chanter lessons from Jack MacIsaac. Since that time, rarely was there a converstion between us that did not mention "bagpipes". Marlene loved her pipes and all things Scottish. A true Highland Lass she was ! Her kind and relaxed disposition was appreciated by all who knew her. Indeed, she walked her own path with a smile !
With love: Brenda MacKean Barss and Charles Barss
