Obituary of Charles Roderick MacLean
Charles Roderick “Charlie” MacLean, 88, New Glasgow, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Gregor and Annie MacLean. In early years, Charlie was employed with the Canadian National Railway, following, he operated the former C. MacLean’s Auto Sales Ltd. and Shell Station on Marsh Street, New Glasgow with his late wife, Shirley for many years. He served several terms on the New Glasgow Police Commission and was a strong supporter of the Conservative Party. Charlie was an avid stock car fan, sponsoring several racing teams over the years. For several years, he donated and drove the pace car at Riverside Raceway, James River. Over the years, Charlie enjoyed spending time at his cottage on Lochaber Lake. He was honoured to have been inducted into the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame several years ago. Charlie enjoyed everything to do with cars, greatly enjoyed meeting people and was an avid walker. He will be greatly missed by those he loved.
Surviving are his daughter, Charlene (Harry) Knoester, New Glasgow; son, Dr. Gregor (Debbie) MacLean, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Jonathan (Janine), Joel (Jeanetta), Matthew and Marnie MacLean; great-granddaughter, Nora Alice MacLean; half-brother, John (Evelyn) Harrison, Middle Musquodoboit; sister-in-law, Ann Callaghan, New Glasgow; several nieces; nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Shirley (Callaghan); sisters, Jessie (Murray) Harrison, Ella (Rod) Tupper; brothers-in-law, Bill (Shirley), Jimmy, Joe, and Alphonce Callaghan; special cousin-in-law, Annette (Kiley) Gillingham.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 14 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 15 with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, Sylvester.
Charlie's family wish to express their sincere appreciation to staff of the Aberdeen Hospital 4th floor and Palliative Care Unit for the excellent care he received.
