Obituary of Matilda Elizabeth McQuinn

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of the matron of our family, Matilda Elizabeth McQuinn, aged 97, of Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of Plymouth and New Glasgow, on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

She was the only daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Oliver) Munro. Mom grew up in New Glasgow and attended New Glasgow High School until Grade 11, at which time she was accepted into the nursing program at St. John General Hospital, St. John, N.B. While living in St. John, she met her future husband, Richard, from nearby Sussex. After graduating in 1950, she returned to New Glasgow and worked at the old Aberdeen Hospital. Mom and Dad married in 1951 and settled in Sussex to raise their family. After the passing of our grandfather, Mom, Dad and us four children returned to New Glasgow to be near Nanny, in 1965.

Mom was an avid brook fisher and could be found fishing in Six Mile Brook into her 70’s. A good day fishing was not complete without scraped legs from walking many miles along the brook. Her family was the center of her universe and knitting was her passion and over the years, every family member was blessed with beautiful sweaters, mitts, and hats. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. No family get together was complete without her famous cherry cheesecake.

Left to mourn are daughter Mary (Aubrey) Fequet, McPhersons Mills, sons, Dave (Mildred), Hay River, N.W.T.; Bob (Susan), Onslow; Rick (Veronica); Trenton; grandchildren, Stephanie ( Brad ), Steven, Shawn ( Sarah ), David-Scott ( Julie ), Marissa (Kevin ), Jon, Travis, Nicole (Dan), Riley, Darren (Taylor) and Devon; great grandchildren, Dawson (Makayla), Josh, Mackenzie, Benjamin, Mathilde, Olivier, Colter, Harper, Noah, Cian and Jaxson;  sisters-in-law, Bette Munro and Carol Munro; many nieces and nephews.

Mom is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Richard; brothers, Robert (died in Second World War), Harry (Shirley), Lloyd (Sandy), Don (Gloria), Ted (Jean), Charlie, and Jim; sisters-in-law, Kay (George) and Helen (Elmer); brothers-in-law, Art (Agnes).

In keeping with Mom’s wishes her family will celebrate her life privately.

Matilda’s family wish to thank the Valley View Villa staff for the excellent care she received over the past three years.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

We love you mom, Mary, Dave, Bob and Rick.
