Obituary of Lionel "Ab" MacDonald

 

Lionel “Ab” MacDonald, 85, Greenhill, passed away peacefully, Sunday, August 25, 2024, in the Aberdeen Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, New Glasgow with his wife Marilyn by his side.

 

Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Ross and Elizabeth (Campbell) MacDonald. Lionel served with the Royal Canadian Airforce for over 30 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of the Bombers Club, New Glasgow and Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 29, Trenton. Lionel was very athletic and loved sports. In early years, he was a phenomenal hockey player, having played with the Greenwood Bombers and Ottawa Falcons when they won the Canadian Hockey championship. Lionel was an inductee of the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame. He was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan until Sidney Crosby came on the scene. Lionel enjoyed watching Blue Jays baseball and golf, and greatly enjoyed a good game of 45’s.  He will be forever remembered as generous, humble and loving gentleman.

 

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Marilyn (Weir); siblings, Iris Guptill, Lydia MacCulloch, Bette Anne (Gordon) Langille, Leona Stewart, Ross (Gail) MacDonald, Brian (Margie) MacDonald and Marion Montgomery; beloved brother-in-law, Bobby Kowalski; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Willena (Angus) Darroch; Evelyn (Neil) MacLaren; brother, Irving (Sherry) MacDonald; brothers-in-law, Francis Guptill, Colin MacCulloch, Bill Hansen and Blake Stewart; nephew “like-a-son”, David MacLaren; sister-in-law “like-a-sister”, Doreen Kowalski; a niece and several nephews; mother-in-law, Janet Elizabeth (MacDonald) Weir and father-in-law, Andrew Keith Weir; grandparents-in-law, Thomas E. and Jean W. (MacNeil) MacDonald.

 

A celebration of life will be held 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at the New Glasgow Bombers Club.
