Obituary of Fred Perry

Frederick Joseph “Fred” Perry, 86, resident of Ivey’s Terrace Nursing Home, Trenton, formerly of Springville, died Sunday, August 25, 2024, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late James Snow and Jessie (Betts) Perry and was one of 17 children.

Fred proudly served for nine years with the Black Watch Regiment.  He served overseas in Germany and Holland and had fond memories of his time in the armed forces.  He was asked to box for the Army, another skill of his, but did not take them up on their offer.

Fred was a devoted husband and father to his family. He possessed a strong work ethic which was demonstrated when he suffered a significant knee injury at work, and he never stopped working. Fred was a back-yard mechanic, and his blue 1975 Ford pickup truck was his pride and joy. He was a talented welder and when the cargo bed on his truck became old and rusty he replaced it with one of his own design that he constructed and welded himself.  He performed volunteer work (welding) for the local fire department, when needed.

Fred loved nature. He had fond memories of his beloved dogs, Laddie and Pal, and the many adventures they shared. While in the army, he managed to befriend a crow that would come when he whistled, and it would sit on his shoulder.

He was kind and generous. Fred always looked forward to his grandchildren’s visits and always had ice cream treats ready for them when they came to visit. He put the needs of his family first, preparing his children to be successful in life. Fred will be dearly missed by those he loved.

Surviving are his daughter, Darlene (Jim) Asprey, St. Albert, Alta.; son, Mark (Brenda) Crossan, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Adam Crossan, Alberta; Shaun (Akreeti) Crossan, Edmonton, Alta.; Alex (Sam) Hines, St. Albert; Carl (Sarah) Hines, Edmonton; and Jason (Brianna) Asprey, St. Albert; great-grandsons, Cooper, Rylan, James and Freddie; brothers, Philip “Buck” (Diane) Perry, New Glasgow; Edward Perry, Trenton; sisters-in-law, Delma Perry, Rocklin; Mary Perry, Little Egypt; brother-in-law, Hugh (Florence) Sutherland, Springville; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Evelyn (Sutherland), who was the love of his life; sisters, Annie Hughes, Janie Anderson, June MacDonald, Helen Provost, Aileen Carey and Shirley Myers; brothers, James “Sonny” Perry, Ernest Perry, John “Jack” Perry, George Perry, Vernon “Cookie” Perry, William “Bill” Perry, Gary Perry, and Emerson Perry; sister-in-law, Sharon Perry; brothers-in-law, Stanley and Hector Sutherland.

The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. Thursday, August 29 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, August 30 in the chapel with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating.

Donations may be made in Fred and Evelyn's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

The Perry family wish to thank Ivey’s Terrace Nursing Home staff, especially, Lois, Tanya, Shauna, Ceci, Jen, Stephanie and Allan for the wonderful care Fred received. They wish to thank the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit staff for the care and compassion shown to Fred and his family.
