Obituary of Ann DeYoung

It is with much sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Hazel Ann DeYoung, 86, on September 15, 2024, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, as the result of a fall, after a hard-fought battle with Dementia, with her husband and children by her side.

Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late Otis and Florence (Stewart) Jennex. Mom was a faithful member and Elder of First United Church, Trenton and could be found there every Sunday morning until her illness made it impossible for her to attend.

She was a stay-at-home mom until we were all in school, she then went to work at our local corner store, then to the Metropolitan store on Provost Street and finally the Pictou County Co-op Grocery Store from where she retired.

When we were small, Mom went to night school and took sewing, she continued sewing into her eighties. She enjoyed sewing, reading, traveling, her flower garden, knitting, crafts, decorating for Christmas (inside and out), dressing up for Halloween and meeting the trick or treaters at the door. After retiring, Mom volunteered at the Aberdeen Hospital gift shop, Martha’s Place, with her good friend, Marg.  Mom’s favorite thing was spending time with her family and her good friends.

Mom leaves behind to mourn, her husband of 68 years, Elmer; children, Arlene (Ben) Dobson, New Glasgow; Glenn (Gladys) DeYoung, MacLellans Brook; Crystal DeYoung, New Glasgow; Wade DeYoung, New Glasgow and Blake DeYoung, Trenton; grandchildren, David (Chriss) Dobson, Jennifer (Alain) Dobson-Melanson, Chelsea (Wade) Parker, Nicole (Grant) MacKinnon, Westley Tupper (Betsy), Alicia and Alan DeYoung; great-grandchildren, Lily, Bryan and David Dobson; Monroe Melanson, Evan, Cameron and Jacob Parker; Hatcher and Sterling MacKinnon; Cole (his mother, Skye) Tupper, Aiden Tupper, and Ethan Gerrior; sisters, Dalphene Rankin and Deanna Curry, Edmonton, Alta; nieces and nephews, Lesley McDuff, Wayne Burns, Sheila Wilcox, Shelly Sohn-Gardiner, Teres Bouillion, Everett and Sherman Rankin; numerous DeYoung nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Blanche Fraser, New Glasgow and Gloria DeYoung, Stellarton; step-sisters, Heather McGowan, Saint John, N.B.; Sandra Fraser, New Glasgow; step-brothers, John Fraser, Hope, B.C.; Scott Fraser, Indiana; beloved friends, Margie Smith and Marg Fraser.

Besides her parents, she is pre-deceased by her grandson, Ryan Tupper; brothers, Stewart and Elmer “Toby” Jennex; stepmother, Betty Jennex, sister-in-law, Loretta (Burns) Jennex; brother-in-law, Bill Rankin; parents-in-law, Joseph and Mary DeYoung; sisters-in-law, Margaret Phalen, Alice Best, Doll Stewart, Jean Clyburn, Agnes Sutherland and Cecilia “Sissy” Sager; brothers-in-law, Joseph, Louis, John, Bert, Pat, Ralph, Wally and Frank DeYoung.

The family would like to say thank you to Lori-Ann for the wonderful care and the love she gave Mom. Marg, for the love and hours she spent sitting with Mom during her hospital stay. We would also like to thank Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit staff.

The family will receive visitors 11-11:50 a.m. Thursday, September 19 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held 12 noon with Mr. Fergie MacKay officiating.  Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery.
