Obituary of Adrian Joseph Heighton
NEW GLASGOW - Adrian Joseph Heighton, 87, New Glasgow, passed away October 28, 2020 with his loving wife and children by his side.
Born on June 19, 1933 in Stellarton, he was a son of the late James and Florence (MacLellan) Heighton. Adrian valued hard work and prided himself in being a dedicated employee of Sobeys Stores for over 34 years, enjoying a varied career that began in 1952. He held various positions including manager, supervisor and district manager throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Newfoundland. Adrian truly enjoyed his career and after many years at head office, retired in 1986. He was a proud member of the Sobeys Quarter Century Club.
Upon retirement, Adrian and Hazel travelled extensively, visiting more than 50 countries on six of the seven continents, with the intent to travel to Antarctica. In addition to their overseas travel, they traveled by motorhome to all Canadian provinces and territories, Alaska and the 48 continuous states. They spent 31 winters at their second home in Eustis, Florida where they developed many enduring friendships.
Adrian was a long-time member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 1667 and Fourth Degree Assembly No. 2222. He was a man of integrity who possessed a kind and generous spirit. Adrian and Hazel had an exceptional union, “holding hands” their whole life together. His love and devotion, unwavering.
Adrian delighted in a wonderful relationship with his three children, in whom he instilled integrity, empathy, work ethic and a desire to explore the world. He was “Papa-Man” to his four grandchildren who treasured his love and valued his genuine concern, sage advice and encouragement. Adrian’s faith, ethics, sense of justice and optimism will forever serve as a guide to his family.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Hazel (MacKenzie), New Glasgow; son, Jimmy (Sasan), New Glasgow; daughter, Kim (Mike) Washburn, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Laura Washburn, Canmore, Alta.; Brianne Washburn, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Ryan Washburn, Canmore; Erin Washburn, Halifax; son-in-law, Alan Sutherland, New Glasgow; brother, Fred (Joyce) Heighton, Stellarton; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by daughter, Karen Heighton; sister, Marie “Neen” Ardern; brothers, Jimmy, Dan, Ambrose and Henry.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson presiding. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
