Obituary of Joan Marie Murray
LOWER BARNEY’S RIVER – Joan Marie Murray, RN, 80, Lower Barney’s River, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 30, 2016 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her family.
Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late Stanley Albert and Patricia Nora (Thompson) Mason. She was a graduate of The Children’s Hospital School of Nursing in Halifax. As a Registered Nurse, she worked at the Aberdeen Hospital for 35 years as a Head Nurse and then Nursing Supervisor. Following retirement, Joan continued to provide “nursing” support in her community. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish where she served in various capacities. Joan was an active volunteer in her community for many years. She served as Secretary, Treasurer and Marker with Murray’s Point Cemetery. Joan leaves a legacy of love and the exemplification of the “Art of Caring”.
Surviving are her daughter, Helen (Ronnie) Farrell, Lower Barney’s River; sons, Wallace Murray (Bonnie) and Donald Peter Murray, Lower Barney’s River; sister, Marion (Rev. Laurence) Mawhinney, Lunenburg; grandchildren, Sarah (Josh), Jeanne (Chris), David (Lindsay), Michael (Shauna-Rae), Jeremy, Emily and Allison; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Hank, Carson and Bree; aunt, Myrtle Huggan, New Glasgow; uncle, Gerald (Doris) Thompson, Ponds; sister-in-law, Joyce MacDonald, Merigomish, many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Lyall Olding Murray.
Joan requested that her passing be honoured by ensuring that her beloved Murray’s Point Cemetery receive donations in her memory in order to keep the cemetery viable for the generations to follow. On Saturday, September 3, her family will receive visitors at the cemetery from 10 -11 a.m. where an opportunity to honour Joan’s wish will be available. Joan’s family will host a graveside service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Laurence Mawhinney and Rev. Bonnie Wynn officiating.
