Obituary of George Devonport Wright
PIEDMONT – George Devonport Wright, 72, Piedmont, passed away Friday, October 29, 2021, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Halifax, with his family by his side.
Born in Elmsdale and moving to River John at the age of two, he was a son of the late Keith Francis and Della Elizabeth (Fraser) Wright. George enjoyed a 49-year career in fish processing. At the age of 14, he began his career with Maritime Packers, Pictou. Throughout his life he was employed with Lismore Seafoods, Lismore; Ocean Choice, Souris, P.E.I., as well as an efficiency consultant in Maine. Every year, George was always at the end of the wharf waving the fishermen out to sea on the first day of lobster season. George greatly enjoyed his work and loved his co-workers. He also worked for brief time at the former Trenton Works. George was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish, where he served as an Elder, Chairman of the Board of Managers and Choir member. He was a gentle, jovial, and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. George was the center of his family's world and a pillar in the community. He was a fun-loving person, who enjoyed making his grandchildren and their friends smile. George was the “go to” person for many. He loved gardening and was an avid bird watcher. Although heart broken, his family are proud of his character and the heartfelt comments about how his passing impacts both them and the community.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Marie (Cumming) Wright; daughters, Jo-Anne (Clark) Dickson, New Glasgow; Erin (Trevor) Stoten, Edmonton, Alta.; Donna MacGregor, Thorburn; Terry MacGregor (Kevin Hughes), McGrath’s Mountain; May MacGregor (Demetrios Lyberopoulos), Halifax; son, Devon (Jodeine) Wright, Lower Barney’s River; grandchildren, Shelby, Carver, Keith, Carter, Ava, Georgia, Tanner, Regen, Sawyer and Hazel; sisters, Beulah Wright, River John; Jean (Russell) MacLean, Pictou; brothers, Lewis (Sandra), River John; Dexter, New Glasgow; Benson (Lorraine), The Ponds; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Leigh Keith and grandson, Kashton Laithe.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4 in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Merigomish with Rev. Gail Johnson-Murdock officiating. Private interment will be in Murray’s Point Cemetery.
