I have always admired Wilkie, since I met him when I started my career as a reporter at The Advocate in 1989. He was a kind and gentle man with a quick smile, a word of encouragement and stories of his personal and professional experiences that were usually far more interesting than meetings the local media covered with him. I learned more from Wilkie about Pictou County, its "movers and shakers" and its politics than any classroom or text book could ever have provided. I've never met anyone who was more respected or liked by his peers, his contemporaries and the wide circle of friends and acquaintances than Wilkie Taylor. I will be forever grateful that I had an opportunity to know him. Few could ever hope to hold a candle to him. Rest well, Wilkie, and perhaps our paths will cross again someday. With sincerest sympathy and fond remembrance. Gordon

Wilkie was the person I credited most for getting me going on my news career. He took a young kid and taught me more than I could have ever learned in a more traditional journalism course. He was a brilliant editor ... a quirky guy with an offbeat sense of humour. RIP my friend.

To Esther and family, Deep condolences on your loss. I learned a lot about the news business from Wilkie and cherished the time we worked together in the Halifax office and in the New Glasgow bureau of The Chronicle Herald. We not only shared a love for journalism but also for our cherished Pictou County. I also recall fondly time spent with you, Esther, and with Paula, Paul and Matthew. My best to you all, Don MacDonald. RIP, Wilkie
