Obituary of Frederick Walter Popowich

NEW GLASGOW – Frederick Walter “Fred” Popowich, 74, New Glasgow, passed away Friday, August 6, 2021, after six years fighting various blood cancers, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on December 4, 1946, in Montreal, Que., he was a son of Margaret (Drab) Popowich, Brantford, Ont. and the late, Arthur Popowich. Fred graduated from Loyola now Concordia with a BA in Theology and then a BLS from University of Toronto. Fred and Coreen went to Nigeria as CUSO volunteers for two years where their first son, Simon was born. Upon return in 1973, they moved to New Glasgow where he worked as a librarian at PARL until retirement in 2013. They spent time visiting parts of Nova Scotia and took various trips to England, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Costa Rica and Cuba. Among Fred’s interests were gardening, playing the accordion, genealogy, volunteering at the Museum of Industry and sports, especially his Canadiens and the former Montreal Expos. Fred and Coreen often had dinner parties, Lobsterpalooza in season and Christmas carolling gatherings. Fred will be missed dearly by his many friends and colleagues around Nova Scotia. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Coreen (O’Brien), New Glasgow; son, Simon (Michelle), Fredericton, N.B.; daughter-in-law, Christine and granddaughter, Veronica, Coldbrook; brothers, Pete (Diane), Guelph, Ont.; Jim (Deb), Jerseyville, Ont.; sister-in-law, Kathy (Michael) Amping, Montreal, Que.; brothers-in-law, Leo (Rosemary) O’Brien, Brampton, Ont.; Kevin (Jackie) O’Brien, Montreal; several nephews. Fred was predeceased by his father, Art, in 2017, and son, Adam, in 2018. A family graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, August 14, 2021, in Holy Cross Cemetery, New Glasgow with Father Colin MacKinnon presiding. Followed by a Celebration of Life at 3 p.m. in Fred’s Garden. If desired, donations may be made in Fred’s memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
