Obituary of Elmer Stanton MacNeill
NEW GLASGOW – Elmer Stanton MacNeill, 71, New Glasgow, died peacefully Saturday, October 30, 2021, in The Mira Nursing Home, Truro with his wife and sister-in-law by his side.
Born in Summerside, P.E.I., he was a son of the late Stanton Norman and Edith Marie (Stewart) MacNeill. Elmer graduated from Prince of Wales College and the University of Prince Edward Island with Bachelor of Science and Education degrees. Upon graduation, he moved to Nova Scotia and began his teaching career at Sherbrooke High School and later taught at Stellarton and Westville High Schools. Prior to retirement Elmer was the head of the Science Department at Northumberland Regional High School, Alma. He was most grateful for the appreciation shown to him by his former students in recognition of his sense of humour and dedication to learning. Elmer was a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan, always believing that “this is the year”. He enjoyed gardening and every year fought a courageous, albeit losing battle with the little brown bunny, who thoroughly enjoyed Elmer’s produce. Elmer is best described by a family friend, “Kara and Andrew, you are the kids with the Dad that everyone loved”.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Janice (Cameron) MacNeill; daughter, Kara MacNeill (Lennard Jenkins), Linacy; son, Andrew (Vanessa) MacNeill, Westville; grandchildren, Brooke, Zoe, Kale and Zackary; sister, Violet MacDonald, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; father-in-law, Robert “Sonny” Cameron, New Glasgow; sister-in-law, Carolyn Taylor (Doug MacInnis), Fraser’s Mountain; brothers-in-law, Jim (Anne) Cameron, Garden Lots; David (Joy) Cameron, Hopewell; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Dolly Cameron; brother-in-law, Aubrey MacDonald; nephews, Kirk Taylor and Donnie MacDonald.
In honour of Elmer’s wishes a private graveside service will be held with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating.
