Obituary of Alice Mary McMillan

NEW GLASGOW - Alice Mary McMillan, 92, New Glasgow, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2015 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late Roger and Margaret Jane (Campbell) MacMillan, she was born on November 24, 1922 and raised at Maple Leaf Farm, Woodfield. Alice attended Woodfield School and later attended the former Maritime Business College, New Glasgow. Marrying John H. McMillan on June 7, 1952, she was employed as a secretary with the former Maritime Steel and Foundries Limited for 10 years and with Hawker Siddeley Canada Inc. for 18 years before retirement in 1985. Alice was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, where she served as church secretary from 1987 to 2008 and as secretary to the Board of Managers for many years. Alice was an active member of the Catherine Mair Missionary Society and was the oldest member of the 55 Plus Seniors Club, for which she was honoured on June 4, 2014. She joined Golden Link Rebekah Lodge No. 2 on June 11, 1948 and received her Veteran’s Jewel on October 9, 1957 and the Declaration of Chivalry on July 9, 2002. Upon closing of the Golden Link Lodge, she transferred to Dorcas Rebekah Lodge No. 42, Thorburn on June 9, 2012. Alice was a very active volunteer, delivering Meals on Wheels and feeding the residents of Glen Haven Manor for many years. She enjoyed line dancing, playing darts, yoga and spending family cottage time at Melmerby. Alice was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Surviving are daughters, Eleanor (Hector) MacDonald, Keppoch, P.E.I.; Peggy (Turk) Verschuren, North Sydney; grandchildren, Jonathan (Jillian) MacDonald, Allison (Mark) Munne, Zach (Erica) Verschuren, Kyle (Renee) Verschuren; great-grandson, Seth Bayne MacDonald; niece, Janet (William) Jardine, Lower Sackville; nephews, Boyd, New Glasgow; Bayne (Heather), Sackville, N.B.; Ian, New Glasgow. She was predeceased by her husband, John Henry McMillan; brothers, Stanley and Howard; sister-in-law, Harriet MacMillan; niece, Darlene MacMillan The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 12th in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, November 13th in First Presbyterian Church, 208 MacLean Street, New Glasgow with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating.
