Obituary of Donald Bert MacKenzie
LORNE – It is with deep sadness, the family of Donald Bert MacKenzie, P. Eng., 78, Lorne, announce his passing on Saturday, March 30, 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Pictou Landing, he was the eldest son of the late Donald Munro and Sarah Elizabeth (Fraser) MacKenzie. He attended grade school in Hopewell and Stellarton High School by taking the train in from Hopewell each day. Donald graduated from St. FX and Dalhousie University with a degree in civil engineering. Donald lived a full life. He was a renowned professional engineer with a very successful career, who worked all over the world, primarily in the Pulp and Paper industry until the age of 75. (Google ERDC Limited for details.)
Donald had many passions in life, a pilot who was fascinated with airplanes and loved to fly. He was multi-engine licensed and had countless adventures flying in many countries around the world and owned numerous airplanes over the years. Another passion was farming with his wife, Rose, where, as stated by his son and grandson, “believe me we could write a book on many a farm story”. Donald was gifted and spoke several languages and had the ability to connect with people. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed by his family and the many lives he touched all over the world. Often at what should have been the end of a long day on the farm, if there was something else he wanted to push on and finish, he would say, “you know, sleep is a waste of time”.
Surviving are his wife, E. Rose (MacDonald); former wife and mother of his children, Florence (Campbell), Westville; son, Donald III (Michelle) MacKenzie, Hopewell; daughters, Charlotte “Charlie” (Greg) Medlock, Texas; Sarah (Jim) Stewart, Alberta; brothers, Alexander (Evelyn) and Louie (Julie), Pictou Landing; sisters, Shirley Gray, Hopewell; Susan (Nick) Halfyard, Pictou Landing; Mae Ormrod (Carl), Westville; grandchildren, Jason (Conny), Jennifer (Jason), Kyle (Megan), Meghan (Scott), Donald IV (Tiffany), Carlie and Emily; great-grandchildren, Allison, Thomas Alexander, Freya, Margo and Gabriella; many nieces and nephews.
