Obituary of Donald Francis Mason

STELLARTON – Donald Francis “Don” Mason, 77, Stellarton, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at home, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late William Donald and Margaret Francis (MacDonald) Mason. Don attended St. F.X. University and Acadia University where he obtained diplomas, but he believed, his greatest education was from his interaction with students. He taught at the former Trenton High School for 30 years. Donald was a patient and devoted educator who taught his students about themselves. A former student stated: “I just want to say if it was not for your grandfather (Don) I would not have fell in love with math, logic, philosophy. He taught me so much about myself and what I love to do. I just graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Physics from Dalhousie University. I’m truly hurt by his passing and hope you (his family) can find happiness in the fact he touched so many lives in the community. Thank you, Mr. Mason.” Don was a husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. A man of few words, his love for family was never in question. With each child and grandchild his heart grew bigger, and his beaming smile grew brighter. Don leaves a legacy of great integrity and honour for his children and grandchildren to follow. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Cecilia “Dot” (Chabassol); children, Lawrence Mason, Westville; Michelle Mason, Stellarton; Sondra Mason (Chris), Salt Springs; Deborah (Nathan) MacKeeman, Trenton; grandchildren, Mark, Cody, Aaron, Katelyn, Jessica and Adrianna; siblings, Ronald Mason, Stellarton; Colleen (John) Heighton, Pictou; Marsha (Ben) Walker, Winnipeg, Man.; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister-in-law, Marlene Mason. In keeping with Don’s wishes his family will celebrate his life privately. If desired, donations may be made in memory of Don to Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education (NNEC Tutoring), Attention: Finance Department, 60 Lorne Street, Truro, NS B2N 3K3.
