Obituary of Ernest Frederick Mombourquette

NEW GLASGOW – It is with great sorrow, the family of the late Ernest Frederick “Fred” Mombourquette, announce his passing at the age of 90 on Wednesday December 7, 2016, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and Sophie (Martell) (Sampson) Mombourquette. Fred was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton. In 1944, he enlisted in the Canadian Army at the age of 18 and following his service, began working for the C.N.R in Sydney. In 1951 he was transferred to Pictou County and after a 20-year career with the CNR, he began a career as the Co-Operative Insurance agent for the Pictou County area until his retirement. Fred was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion since 1951. He served as president of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 34, New Glasgow in 1966 and 1971, Zone Commander of Zone No.6, Pictou County in 1990. Fred served as president of the Nova Scotia / Nunavut Command in 2001. He served on the Dominion Command Executive for over 10 years and was appointed a member of the Legions Veterans Ombudsman Advisory Committee by Dominion Command in 2003 for a four-year term. In 1992 Fred was awarded the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, which was awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or country. He was an avid curler and a life member of the Bluenose Curling Club, where he served as President in 1967. Fred was the first President of the Pictou County Amalgamated Credit Union in 1964 and was one of the founding members of the Pictou County Co-op store. Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Agnes (Gillis) Mombourquette; daughters, Beverly, Ann Marie, Patricia (Bill) Delaney, all of Halifax; sons, Bill (Virginia), New Glasgow; Joey (Jeanette), Stellarton; Fred and Wayne, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Lisa, Michael, Mark, Amanda, Jennifer, Sarah, Suzie and Amy; seven great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by great-grandson, Hayden Mombourquette. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec 10 in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson presiding. Interment will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Stellarton. Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 34, Tribute Service will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9 in the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Fred’s memory to Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 34, Poppy Fund.
