Obituary of Charles Phillip Stewart
Charles Phillip “Big Phip” Stewart, Thorburn, was reunited with his best friend and love of his life, Marjorie “Dokie” on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.
Born on April 13, 1936, he weighed 14lbs and that was not the only quality that made our Dad unique. He was a true gentleman who worked hard and dedicated his life to his family. Dad was blessed with a wonderful voice and loved to sing hymns and enjoyed a good old-fashioned kitchen party. A lifelong resident of Thorburn, he grew up playing hockey on the Old Row pond and was a member of the Thorburn Braves ball team during his youth.
Dad’s gift of voice and love of music led him into the arms of his wife of 50 years, Dokie. Together they sang songs and entertained many at parties and get togethers over the years. Dads work career started when he was young, working at Hawker Siddley bucking rivets. He was a construction labourer in the building of East Pictou Rural High School in 1951. For many years’ dad was employed with Quality Cleaners Ltd and was well known in the county as the “dry-cleaning man”. Following, dad took a job with The Chignecto Regional School Board as a custodian, from where he retired in 2001. Dad always enjoyed a good game of poker or cribbage. He loved the early mornings and always said, “it was the best time to get things done”. In his later years, he enjoyed evening walks around the community always stopping to chat with neighbors and friends along the way. Dad took pride in everything he did whether it was mopping a floor or mowing the lawn, it had to done right and to perfection. He was truly blessed with an infectious smile and personality that radiated to all who knew him.
Dad was a kind, gentle and loving man who would always go out of his way for anyone. He will be dearly missed. Left behind to treasure his memory are his son, Phillip Jr. “Little Phip” (Laurie) Stewart and their son’s PJ (Brittany) Stewart and Brad (Alisha) Gillis; daughter, Sherry Lynne (Dave) George and their daughter, Shae Stewart (Aaron) and great-granddaughter, Maci Autumn; “big” brother, Fred Stewart; sister-in-law, Patricia (Whitey) McKinnon.
Welcoming Dad into his eternal home are his mom, Margaret and dad, William; brothers, Donald, Chalmers and William; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean, Gale, Helen, Mary “Noopie”, Teena, Edna, Marilyn “Chickie”, Linda, Gretta Joyce “Diddles”, Lewis, Sheldon, Jim and Ross; his grandson, Chris and great granddaughter, McKenzie Shae now are able to give their Gampy big hug and kiss as they welcome him home.
Dad’s remains have been cremated. A public ceremony to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
Lovingly written and submitted by his children, Sherry Lynne and Little Phip.
