Obituary of Douglas Alexander Humphreys

NEW GLASGOW – Douglas Alexander “Sandy” Humphreys, 68, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully at home, Sunday, August 2, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. A man might not require a loud voice to be considered strong. Strength and determination can often be found in his silence; such was the life of Sandy Humphreys. A quiet man, a good man, a nice man, a kind man, an honest man, a hardworking man, a talented man, and a man with a twinkle in his eye. Sandy was born in New Glasgow on September 4, 1951. He was the son of Keddy Humphreys and the late Eric Humphreys. The family house on the corner of Grant Street where he grew up with his mother, brothers and sisters defined the word “home” to him throughout his life. He shared a special bond with his mother from the day he was born until the day he died. His acts of love and kindness towards her were never-ending. He was a great son. As Keddy’s eldest son, he was the family leader to his four siblings: Alan, Gary, Carol Martin, and Kathy Holman. Life was not always easy. He set an example of hard work and determination for all to follow. He was a great brother. The years he spent working with his grandparents, Elsie and John W. MacKay, at their Marsh Street garage, laid the cornerstone in the formation of his work ethic from those days forward. In 1973, Sandy met Donna Weir and in 1982 they were married. Together they built a home and raised three beautiful children, creating memories that would last a lifetime. He was a great husband. The pride and love he felt towards his three children; Blair (Brittany), Kathryn (Bobby) and Karen (Mike), came from deep within his heart. Last weekend (July 25th), with his wife Donna by his side, he took great joy in attending the marriage of his daughter, Kathryn Jean, to Bobby Zinck. Smiling for pictures, sitting on the cottage deck telling stories and sharing remembrances was his way of completing the circle of life. What mattered the most to Sandy were the lives of his children. He loved his son, Blair, unconditionally and took great pride in knowing that Blair would carry on with the business, Glasgow Welding and Trailer Maintenance, that Sandy worked so hard to create. He loved his girls, Kathryn and Karen, dearly. He was especially proud of the beautiful young women they have become, capable of carrying on with their loving memories of him firmly in place. He was a great father. He was happiest out in Lorne, sitting on the step of the camp with a guitar in one hand and close friends gathered around playing music and singing old favorite songs. His best (4-legged) buddy, Maddie, was never far from his side. He was a great friend. Sandy was a believer in “less is more”. He was an honorable man and known as a “straight shooter”. He was a provider to anyone in need and took great pleasure in helping others. “Keeping one’s light under a bushel” was very much how Sandy lived his life. In 1952, there was a John Wayne movie called, “The Quiet Man”. Sandy Humphreys was a quiet man with a good heart. If one wants to remember him just sing him a song on your guitar or do a kindness for another … in a quiet way. In keeping with Sandy’s wishes, his family will honour his memory with a private graveside service. If desired, donations may be made in Sandy’s memory to the Pictou County SPCA or Canadian Cancer Society. (to donate please click on the underlined) Sandy’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the Victorian Order of Nurses, sister-in-law, Donna Humphreys and close family friend, Anne MacLeod, who all contributed to making his final wish to be at home with his family, possible.
