Obituary of Joan Lorraine Gero

NEW GLASGOW – Joan Lorraine “Mickey” Gero, 89, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully, Monday, July 18, 2022, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by the love of her family.

 

Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Maizie Rebecca Parker. In earlier years, Joan was employed at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax. She was one of the first women to be hired by Michelin Tire, Granton, where she was employed for over 30 years. Joan had the distinction of having been at Michelin for the one millionth and ten millionth tire production.  She was a faithful member of Second United Baptist Church, New Glasgow, where she served as an usher/greeter, assisted with the Junior Choir and Ladies Auxiliary.  Joan possessed a deep faith in her Lord and was faithful in Bible Study and Prayer.  She enjoyed travelling, bingo, golfing and was an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan. Joan was especially grateful for friends, Phyllis Patterson, Ora Lucas, Jahalia “Haley” Smith, Mae Johnson, and Geraldine Parker with whom she shared many wonderful experiences. She possessed a great sense of humour, a generous spirit, and an unwavering love for her family.

 

Surviving are her daughters, Natalie, New Glasgow; Barbara-Ann, Halifax; sons, Blaine, New Glasgow; Richard (Doreen), Oromocto, N.B.; Darrell (Micheline), Stellarton; Dennis, Ottawa, Ont.; father of her children, Russell (Dianne) and their son, Benjamin, Halifax; grandchildren, Lesley (Jason), Justin “B.J.”, Kristen, Kyle S., Ryan (Amber), Brandon (Vanessa), Morgan, Brandy (Mikey), Kyle A., Shannon (Chad), Samantha (Justin), Tony, Amelie (Katie), Duane, Curtis (Natasha); great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Braylon, Kyrie, Ellis, Chanel, Jackson, Aila, Duane “Jo-Jo”, Deion; brother, Melvin “Sonny” (Carol Ann) Parker, Truro; sister, Joan Adams Fraser, New Jersey; several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by son, Blair Charles; brother, Harold “Buddy” Parker.

 

The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 21st at P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow.  Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 22nd at Second United Baptist Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Dr. Rhonda Britton officiating. Interment will be in Lorne Street Cemetery, New Glasgow.

 

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to special VON nurses, Natalie, Julie and Heather, family friend, Alanna McQuaid, and all the nursing staff in the transition and palliative care units at Aberdeen Hospital for taking special care of Mom.

Donations may be made in Joan’s memory to Second United Baptist Church.
