Obituary of Robert David Chisholm

Robert David Chisholm, 74,  of Broadway Nova Scotia passed away on January 16, 2024 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He was born in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. He was the son of the late Edward Ratti and Ellen Gladys (Wilkinson) Chisholm.

He received his early education in New Glasgow at St. John’s Academy and New Glasgow High School. He was a graduate of the former Nova Scotia Vocational School  in Stellarton and  the former Nova Scotia Teacher’s College in Truro. He received his bachelor of Industrial Science Education at the University of Southern Maine, as well as completing programs at the University of British Columbia and the University of Waterloo. He taught industrial arts at J.L. Isley High School in Spryfield and at Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School in Antigonish. In later years, he taught computer science, entrepreneurship, and math.

During his teaching career, David also taught adult education, was a course writer for the Department of Education, and was a member of the Metric Task Force. He also taught photography to the former 4-H Club in Sutherland’s River. Prior to teaching, David worked in high steel bridge construction for the Pacific Great Eastern Railroad in Northern British Columbia and for INCO at the Levack Mine in Sudbury, Ontario.

In his youth, David was a sea cadet, army cadet, and a member of the militia and reserve army. During his college years, David played rugby and was a long-distance runner. He was also a certified scuba diver. David enjoyed the outdoors and did a fair amount of hunting and fishing. He was keenly interested in politics throughout his life and was involved at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels.

A confident and mentor to many, he will best be remembered for his analytical mind, his sense of humor, devotion to family, and loyalty to friends. In his later years, David was struck with medical problems which he faced with patience and humility.

He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife Carol (Cheverie), his two cherished daughters, Cara Marie, Halifax, and Sarah Ann, Vancouver, B.C. He was predeceased by brother, Francis in infancy and his brother, Richard.   He is survived by sister, Anne (Bill) Burns, New Glasgow; brother, Edward (Shirley), Glace Bay; brother in-law, Leonard (Sharon) Cheverie, Pictou; nieces, Adena (Ben) Malyk, Jennifer (Joe) Majan; nephew, John Edward Chisholm; numerous first cousins.
