Obituary of Garnet Gordon Worthen

 

Garnet Gordon Worthen, 84, Alma, passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen hospital, palliative care unit on September 26th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.  

 

Born in New Glasgow on May 13, 1940, he was a son of the late James Herbert and Nora (Feltmate) Worthen. 

 

Garnet and his soulmate Mae started and founded Alma Homes and Campers. In 1977, he started the business in his backyard and then it grew with the help of his son Todd and his loyal neighbor Mary Hare, who has been there from the start. Garnet and Todd worked up until the very end as a father and son duo, tackling everything together. He truly appreciated and valued the hard work and dedication that all the past and present employees have given over the years to make the family business what it is today. Garnet taught everyone around him about working hard and instilled great family values. Garnet’s passion for business was only surpassed by his love for his family, family meant everything to him. That is one reason he was so happy to have Todd by his side in the family run business.

 

Garnet was a member of Greenhill-Alma United Church. When Garnet was not working, he would be found spending time with his family, travelling in the earlier years, the many trips to Florida with all his family, he loved socializing, and he also loved the Toronto Maple Leafs. Like his wife Mae, he also had a kind heart and caring nature, and always wanted to help everyone he knew. Garnet was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. 

 

Besides his parents he was predeceased by the love of his life of 58 years Mae Worthen (Bib) and his brothers Ron and Bob. 

 

Surviving are his four children, Tim, Stellarton; Todd (Alta), New Glasgow; Lori (Joe), Chester; Terry (Jennifer), Dartmouth. 

 

He adored and was so proud of his grandchildren, Devan (Lee), Travis (Micahla), Janelle (Chad), Josh (Emily) and Brandon (Claire). He was also overjoyed to have and loved his four great grandchildren, Violet, Colton, Evelyn, and Ayana whom they called “GG”. 

 

Also surviving are his sisters Maisie, Joyce, and Gloria, many nieces, and nephews. Garnet will be missed by his closest friends and neighbors, Peter and Mary Hare, John and Beverley MacKinnon. He will also be missed by his side kick and canine companion Jax. 

 

Like Mae, Garnet always stated he also would rather a “hello” than a “goodbye” and in honor of his wishes, his family will celebrate his life privately.

 

Garnet’s family wish to thank the doctors, nurses, staff and caregivers of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow for the care received. A special thank you for the exceptional care on his final resting days under palliative care. A special thank you also to his home care workers Marsha and Lisa.
